Weekend Roundup - November 8-9

8U Mites

The 8U Mite-y Hens won both games this past weekend, starting with a 10-3 takedown of the PA Huntsmen. Stone Gibilisco scored five goals while Theo Brainard and Luke Scott each found the back of the net twice. Emma Gliniak and Aiden Graham also scored for the Hens.

The Hens then returned home for an early Sunday morning game against the Quakers (Grey), who were defeated by a score of 8-2. Theo Brainard scored four goals to lead the offensive attack. Stone Gibilisco scored twice while Nick DeLuca and Luke Scott notched a goal apiece.

Tip of the cap to Liam Peipoch, who picked up a pair of wins in goal for the Blue Hens.

Next up for the Mites is an early morning away game in Maryland against the Easton IceHawks on Sunday.

10U A Squirts

From Coach Chris: 10UA made the trek to Hatfield on Saturday to take on Genesis Green for the second time this season.  Sometimes late afternoon games after a long drive can take their toll on us, but the boys did not disappoint.  We talked about relentless pursuit of the puck, taking away time and space to force mistakes, and one of the best ways to play great defense is to pin the other team in their own zone.  We executed on each of these to the "T", more than doubling up Genesis in shots by a final total of 33-14.  We even added in some superb passing plays that led to some really nice goals as well as some defensive plays made possible by pure outright effort.... truly a team win.

10U B Squirts

The 10UB Delaware Jr. Blue Hens battled back from a 5-0 deficit at home against the Exton Kings on Sunday before ultimately falling by a score of 8-2.

The Hens answered back with a pair of goals and just missed a third before the Kings netted three more to ice the game.

Jack Anthony scored a goal and contributed an assist for the Hens. Zach Pine scored the other goal for the Hens while A.J. DeLuca notched a helper.

Goalie Aiden McGrath stopped 42 of 50 shots and made several great saves. The Hens travel to Wilmington to face the Nighthawks on Saturday morning before returning home to host Princeton later that evening (6:25 PM).

12U A American PeeWee

From Coach Mike: The 12U A team was down in Chesapeake VA for our first tournament of the season.  Although we were unable to get a win, we felt our team played some of its best hockey of the season.  We were matched up against 12UAA and High A opponents and we were missing a few of our 2nd year players.  We also had to deal with some really questionable officiating throughout the tournament.  Despite all of this, we took a "no excuses" approach, and our team battled hard all through the weekend.  Our goaltending was outstanding and our team defense was solid.  We need to focus on generating more quality scoring chances and burying them when they are there.  Now let's get to some of the off ice highlights...  The hotel staff was phenomenal.  They went out and bought games for the team and provided snacks and Gatorade throughout the weekend.  We were provided with a large conference room where the team was able to play mini sticks and other various games.  From a team bonding aspect, this was a great weekend.  Team meals, swimming, and plenty of games and activities with each other when we weren't at the rink.  All in all, a good weekend, even though we didn't get the results we were looking for on the ice.  We'll be looking to get back in the win column this weekend as we head North to face the Hatfield Ice Hawks on Saturday morning.

12U B National Peewee

The 12U B Crew traveled to The Barn for a league game against the Chester County Cougars. Looking to turn the tide on a bad streak, the kids were fired up and ready to go. Blasting off over 30 shots on net yielding a single goal, the Hens did what they could against a top notch goalie. Ultimately it wasn’t enough, coming away with a 2-1 loss was tough for the team. We need to rally for a challenging upcoming weekend facing the Hershey Jr. Bears and Wilkes Barre Jr. Penguins.

16U A American Midget

The 16U A American Crew hit the road for the Congressional Veteran’s Day Cup tournament in Northern Virginia. Our first match up was against the Jersey Shore Wildcats at 11am on Friday morning in Haymarket Iceplex. The boys came ready to play, hitting the ice with determination and drive. Right out of the gate the teams were pretty evenly matched, with everyone feeling each other out. Shots on goal were dead even throughout the first period, and both goalies were locked in. The second period kicked off much like the first, with even play back and forth. Rolling in to the 3rd we were hungry, and ready to change the tone. 5 minutes in, Jackson Persoleo saw an opening and took it, racing down the ice on a breakaway and popping it right past their goalie to finally put us on the board. A 1-0 score with 9 minutes left in the third is a tense place to be, but we were relentless with the pressure forcing them to pull the goalie with just over a minute left. In a battle for the puck in our defensive zone, Gavin Lawry got his stick on the puck and shot it up the ice smack in the middle of that open net, securing our 2 goal lead. Brody Szyjka was a force to be reckoned with, not only did he stop every one of the 23 shots on goal he faced, he absolutely shut them down not even giving a chance for rebounds. The Hens ended the morning with a 2-0 win, and a second shutout of the season for Brody.

After a team dinner, game 2 on Friday evening found the team back at Haymarket against the Richmond Generals Selects. Feeling great about our morning performance, the boys were hyped up for a repeat. Hitting the ice with full force, they battled hard from the first puck drop and dominated the entire game. Tristan Fischer found the back of the net first, with help from Nate Meissner. Two minutes later, on a Power Play, Paxton Hafner passed to Jeet Patel for what would end up being the game winning goal. The generals found the net once on a fluke breakaway, and Brody stopped every other puck that made it’s way to him like an absolute beast.

With a late afternoon game Saturday, the team headed to Top Golf for a bit of fun and food before hitting the ice. The third game of the tournament had us at Ion Training Center for a match up against the Charleston Stingrays. Absolutely pumped from two prior wins and riding that wave, the boys were confident they could maintain the streak. Getting the game rolling, Oscar Wiebke tipped one in off a pass from Josh Revis which absolutely set off the whole team. Completely pumped up and feeling rush, Kaiden McCoury and Rowan Donohue executed a perfect play to net the second goal of the game. On a power play a couple minutes later, Josh Revis found a hole and sailed up the ice on a breakaway and tucked one in for our third goal of the game. The second period tipped slightly in the Stingray’s favor, netting them two goals to bring the score Hens 3 Rays 2 at the start of the 3rd. The boys agreed this wouldn’t do, and lit the ice up throughout the 3rd. Rowan knocked in his second goal of the game off a sweet pass from Jackson Persoleo. Not to be outdone, Oscar passed up the boards to Kaiden McCoury who then connected with Josh Revis on a gorgeous play to take us up 5-2. The team was electrified at this point and absolutely rock solid on offense and defense. Kaiden had more to give, netting his third assist when passing to Jeet Patel who found his second goal of the weekend. And, bringing us home for our 7-2 win were Jackson Persoleo and Connor Clark working together beautifully to end the day on a high note and seal our spot in the Championship Game on Sunday.

The Championship Game on Sunday had the boys on the ice versus the Richmond Generals Selects. Coming in with a vengeance knowing we’d beaten them already, we expected the game to be intense and it was. Both teams were playing to the limit, neck and neck throughout. After the first period ended with no goals scored, the refs said “I can already tell this game is ending in a shootout”. The second period was the same, neither team finding a scoring opportunity. The third period was just as tense, with both teams battling hard and coming up very evenly matched. With 2 minutes left on the clock, rink officials came over to plan for overtime and a potential shootout to determine the winner when the Selects caught a lucky break and snuck one past Brody through the backdoor. It was just the opening they needed, and yanked the championship right out from under us. Finishing with a score of 1-0, we accepted 2nd place after a phenomenal weekend of hockey. The team played some of their best games yet, and if we were going to finish anywhere but 1st this was the way to do it.

16U A National Midget

The 16U A National crew had the weekend off!

16U AA Midget

From Coach Jesse: U16 AA had an EJ showcase last weekend. We started with the Long Beach Lightning on Friday night.  We came in lacking focus and it showed.  We did not play our best, losing 5-1 to an inferior team.  Andy Wu started off our scoring on a nice break sprung by Steven Melson and DJ Mast. From then on we were not in position, we did not have any flow, and could not connect on any passes. Erik started the game after being ill most of the week and gave it all he had but needed Quinn to step in and spell him.

The following morning we played against the Potomac Patriots again. A team that we played our worst game of the season against at the end of September.  This time we were better prepared.  They started the scoring off on a PP where we lost a guy and they beat Quinn backdoor.  We struck back on a short handed effort by Chris (Wingstop) Howie, where Ethan Chantler won the puck in the zone and chipped it up to Chris who can fly. Chris went in on the breakaway and made them pay, knocking one deep in the net.  Potomac scored 2 more goals to go up 3-1 at the half.  Coming out of the half, Potomac got another one to make it 4-1 but we never quit.  Steven Melson finished a beautiful PP goal that was exactly how we drew it up on passes from Ryan Syto and Tanner Kinkus. Next, Wingstop struck again on an outlet from Riley Natfzinger that brought us to 4-3.  We were applying the pressure and gaining ground when Potomac struck again on an individual effort by one of their top players.  Another one of their top players added another goal and we ended 6-3.  I was happy with the boys' effort and attitude. We closed the gap on the first place team going from 12-4 to 6-3. Come to find out later that they have a couple players that play on the Junior USPHL team and this team. That is fine by us as that will only make us better.

Next up were the Prestige NY Stars. We had a run in with them the last time we played them as we beat them pretty bad and things got chippy. Both teams left the ice at the same time and crossed paths and parents had to get involved. This time it was a closer game. They got a shot on net that Quinn did not see and went up 1-0, then they parked the bus. Basically they had 4 guys back and one at the red line.  We eventually broke through when Justin Silver picked up the puck in the slot and beat the goalie glove high to tie the game.  Later in the game Wyatt Gooch took a nice rush up the right side and had his shot blocked, picked the puck back up and threw it on net and it went in. We are always telling the boys to put it on net and he was rewarded with the game winning goal.

Next up we had the South West Chester Blackhawks who we previously lost to by a score of 3-1.  They came out and put the first one by Quinn, and that was it. DJ Mast got us on the board with a shot from the point with assists from Riley and Ian. . Riley Naftzinger got the next one off of a feed from Tanner TK Kinkus to go in to half up 2-1.  Then the flood gates opened. Wyatt Bolin got one with help from Riley Naftzinger and Tanner Kinkus. Riley put another one by with help from Wyatt Gooch.  Then on the power play we were moving the puck, caught them over rotating and Wyatt Bolin fed Justin J$ Silver who buried a perfect pass.  Our last goal was scored by Steven Melson off of a feed from Chips Bockhorn to go up 6-1. We ended the showcase 2-2 and need to work on our mental preparation on school days which we will continue to learn.

Next up is rivalry weekend. We play the Wild Saturday in Downingtown, and then at home Sunday morning, and Saturday afternoon we head to Chester County for a well anticipated match up.
